Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, has taken another step toward more efficient public transport management. In partnership with the consortium “TERNA-INDIGITAL-AMCO”, Ridango has delivered a full-scale implementation of its operations control and real-time passenger information systems, along with key tools that help ensure passengers stay informed and operators stay in control. The goal of the project was to enable seamless daily management of the bus fleet and improve access to real-time service information for passengers.
What Was Delivered
The following components were delivered and integrated:
- Ridango AVL System – for real-time fleet tracking, operational control, and data-driven performance management
- Papercast Displays – to provide passengers with live bus arrival information at stops across the city
- Content Management System (CMS) – for managing data shown on the Papercast displays
- Maior Scheduling System Integration – ensuring that up-to-date timetables are correctly reflected throughout the system
With this setup, the city’s transport operators can monitor services in real time, respond to disruptions, and provide accurate, timely updates to passengers.
Improved Service Monitoring and Passenger Communication
The Ridango AVL system includes a robust prediction engine to estimate arrival and travel times. This enables reliable information delivery to both passengers and control centres. Key benefits include:
- Live service monitoring – track buses in real time and access key operational KPIs
- Performance contract management – follow up on contract execution by operators with accurate, real-time data
- Passenger alerts and ETAs – share timely arrival estimates and service alerts on displays and other communication channels
- Disruption and delay handling – get clear visibility into delays, early departures, and missed headways, with user-friendly tools for resolution
- Driver behaviour tracking – help reduce operating costs per kilometre through insights into driving patterns
